ELF is an environmental legal charity assisting communities across the UK with accessing free legal and technical assistance. ELF has been assisting communities for over 25 years and is the only grassroots charity in the UK, playing this vital role. Through ELF’s Advice and Referral Service members of the public can access free guidance and support through ELF’s in-house team and legal advice through ELF’s professional multi-disciplinary membership.

Having had one paralegal working with us this summer which has been a great success, we are now looking to find a replacement paralegal to assist our central legal team. The paralegal role will mainly support the Case Director. This is an ideal opportunity for a paralegal/ lawyer wishing to gain public interest environmental law and planning experience.

The role will entail assisting the case director with the day to day administration of the Advice and Referral Service, ELF’s core service. The role will also include assisting with the ELF Law Clinics, a network of pro-bono law clinics across the UK at participating universities. Daily duties may include analysis and data entry of new cases, analysis of on-going cases, liaison with ELF clients and ELF professional membership, research legislation and case law, instructing Counsel, drafting responses to ELF enquirers and some litigation work. There will be opportunities for assisting with writing case reports for the ELF website, media blogs and articles for the ELF newsletter. The role will be as varied and as diverse as ELF itself. Being a small charity, there is never a typical day and you never know what to expect. There will be opportunities for attending court and public inquiries as an observer, Covid dependant of course.

About you

You will have completed and passed Law School or Bar School and have gained some experience already as a paralegal. It will be advantageous if you have had some public law and litigation experience.

You will be able to demonstrate a real passion for the environment, having had some previous experience in the environmental sector and broad knowledge of current environmental issues.

Good writing skills are a must and being able to communicate complex legal information clearly to non- lawyers. You will be a team player, with a strong work ethic, along with a demonstrable understanding and commitment to environmental and/or social justice, including how law can effect positive change.
